I am being hounded for a debt that was settled in 1999.How do I get rid of the vermin?

My father settled a debt for me in 1999.I heard nothing until this year.The debt seems to have been passed on.I am being threatened with court proceedings.I have replied on numerous occasions but have received no replies to my letters.
